Features and Capabilities

Capabilities:

Purchasing Audi-Graph will include all instruments and recordings in that family. For example, if you purchase Audi-Graph for saxophone, you will receive soprano, alto, tenor and beri recordings. You will also receive free updates and additional recordings as the library expands. Both the single instrument and ensemble versions of Audi-Graph contain the same functions.

Unlike other sound recording analyzers, Audi-Graph works in real time. It begins playing back immediately when you start playing. And you can see live feedback of how adjustments affect your sound. Both free and costly alternatives only display your sound after you have played. Immediate feedback is optimal in learning scenarios.

Audi-Graph can easily be incorporated into curriculum for band directors and private instructors. It can be used as a simply as a tuner for equal/just temperaments, or to visualize constituency in buzzing mouthpieces. It can be used in the full band, ensemble or private setting to provide an instant visual demonstration of technique to students. When a student is practicing at home, they have the same audio and visual playback features to match and practice with. Any long tone warm-up exercise will be adequate as the playback begins immediately and loops until the student stops playing.

Audi-Graph is designed for use in non-studio environments, such as in practice rooms or at home where there can be significant background noise. While various environmental acoustics can influence sound detection, Audi-Graph is intentionally designed to minimize as much of the room acoustics and background noise as possible.

Audi-Graph is intended for student musicians with 1-6 years of experience. Traditionally this means middle/intermediate and high school students from grades 6-12. Adult students or more experienced musicians can also use it as a guide or reference to study complex acoustics or even compare how different equipment affects the sound.

Features:

- Audi-Graph contains chromatic scale recordings of multiple musicians for each instrument. Current musicians are based in Texas, as it is local to the inventor. New musicians are being added regularly.
- Audi-Graph plays back the recorded note simultaneously as the student plays, and loops for as long as the user holds the note.
- Audi-Graph can be configured to play any chord simultaneously with the student. The student can play any note in the chord and Audi-Graph will build the chord around them. Students can play the 5th in an Augmented 5th and Audi-Graph will play the rest of the notes.
- Just tempered tuning will provide a reference on the tuner to show students just how flat or sharp they need to play to play in tune on the just tempered scale for any note. Audi-Graph will shift the recorded audio to the appropriate pitch as well to continue providing accurate playback to match against.
- Articulation study provides a 5 second window for students and instructors to play and visualize their technique. Playback can be cropped to any point, and even slowed down dramatically to emphasize attack/release duration. Articulation study can be used to address note attack, release, consistency in tone and air stream on a held note, consistency among several individual staccato, legato, accented, tongued notes, and many more.
- Instructors can record and share new musicians to provide them to students to practice against. Simply turn on record and play the chromatic scale.
- Students can record and play against themselves to study how different mouthpieces/equipment affects the sound.
- Multiple recordings can be simultaneously loaded and studied. Scroll through each note to see how each compares to eachother.

A Note on Claims:

Audi-Graph is displaying the overtones and harmonic frequencies generated when you play. The science behind what Audi-Graph displays is based on acoustics and the physics of sound. Mathematical models are used to dissect the sound. The resultant "picture" is not an artistic interpretation. What is shown on screen is a precise and accurate representation of the input sound based on the models used.

Audi-Graph does not tell the student what and how to improve. Much like a tuner, it visually reports exactly what is being played. The teacher/student interprets the display. An effective approach is to simply play and make various adjustments and see the effects. Some adjustments may initially feel uncomfortable, but may produce the ideal sound.

Audi-Graph does not claim to have or determine the perfect example of sound. Audi-Graph simply records the musicians as they are with the belief that symphony musicians and instructors play with an ideal sound compared to a student. You decide which musician you would like to practice against. You always can add new musicians yourself. Most of what Audi-Graph has pursued has been classical sounds. Keep in mind that many professional classical sounds share the same basic elements, especially when played with a straight tone, no vibrato, dynamics, articulation, attack or release, or any musical embellishments.
